MONTGOMERY — Have yourself a day, Alanna Akien! Aiken – along with a host of Knights – took the No. 3 (5A) Brew Tech Rams to the woodshed Monday afternoon, on the way to a 14-1 victory. Montgomery Catholic’s Monday afternoon upset was easily their biggest of the season, as the Knights improve to 11-9-1 on the year.

“We finally were aggressive and had some confidence at the plate,” said Whitney Toole, coach of the Montgomery Catholic Knights. “We’re getting more hits through our lineup and up just at two or three spot in it.”

Aiken led the Knights offensive onslaught by banging out her third grand slam of the year, finishing the outing with seven RBIs. Carissa Gilbert pitched a five-inning three-hitter scattering five strikeouts over the outing.

Toole: “Carissa pitched a great game against a good hitting team. I’m proud of the girls’ effort today and hope we can use this momentum going into area play.”

Gabby York’s solo shot was the only blemish on an otherwise remarkable pitching performance.

Back to Montgomery Catholic’s offensive outpouring: McKenzie Norton had three hits and three runs scored, Mallory Hildebrand had two hits, two runs scored and drove home three runners, Auburn Wilcoxson, Chloe Walden and Nona Johnson had two hits and 2 runs scored each.

Inside the Rams circle Romona McLeod and Taniyah Brown combined for the loss.

York added a single to finish the day with two hits and joined Airele Anderson in having all of the team’s offensive outp

Softball Recaps:

St. James 13, Dadeville 7

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE — Despite giving up 13 runs, the 10 errors proved to be too much of a self-inflicted for Dadeville to overcome. The Tigers dropped a Monday decision to St. James, 13-7.

Savannah Christian and Emerson Hagen combined to pick up the win, striking out a combined six Tigers batters.

Grace McCary took the brunt of the damage done by Trojans batters, allowing seven runs (only one earned) and six hits over three and two-thirds innings of work. Zoe Veres and Tess McKinley combined to work the remaining innings, giving up six runs (none earned).

Offensively for the Tigers, Veres doubled twice and drove home three runs. McKinley and Brittani Tinsley also drove runs in. Overall though, Dadeville left four runners stranded.

IsaBellah Bright doubled for the Trojans as a host of St. James batters converted baserunners into runs. Cameron Greene, Hannah Grace Griggs, Morgan Parish, Maddox Trumbly, MaKenzie Corley and Peyton Dees finished the outing with RBIs to their credit.

Edgewood 13, Hooper 2

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE — The Brown sisters came to play Monday afternoon, connecting on a combined seven hits (three four Lindsey and four for Haylee) and driving in a combined seven runs (two for Lindsey and five for Haylee) in a thorough thumping of Hooper Academy. Katelyn Whitehurst and Mollie Snow combined for four hits and three RBIs as the Wildcats rattled off 14 hits and finished the outing with a combined 13 RBIs.

Edgewood touched up Lady Colts pitching for eight doubles, a triple (Snow) and a home run (Haylee Brown).

Harleigh Anderson picked up the win, working a complete game with six strikeouts.

Hayden 17, Center Point 0

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE — The Hayden High Wildcats made short work of Center Point Monday afternoon, scoring 17 runs over two innings. The story, though, is not the offensive output or the fact that it took longer to clean the dugouts and drag the field than it did to actually play the game. Savannah Painter and Emily Adkins needed only 37 pitches to combine for the win. The two struck out a combined eight and issued just one free pass (the runner was left stranded) but allowed no hit and no run on the way to the win.

The hits – for the Wildcats – came in bunches; 11 of them were needed to push home 17 runs.

Becca Benton, Ansley Armstrong, Gabby Knighten and Miah Simmons all rattled off doubles. Kiley Weston and Taylor Yeager had two of the day’s longest and loudest – both hammering out home runs. But the hit parade didn’t stop there.

Alyssa Jinright, Tinley Johnson, Knighten (two), Kailee McCombs (two), Simmons, Weston (two) and Yeager (three) used their at-bats to push baserunners home.

Baseball Recaps:

Edgewood 14, Hooper 0

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE — Connor Bailey saddled the Hooper Academy Colts Monday afternoon with six strikeouts giving up a hit and a free pass.

For the Wildcats offense – it seemed the Colts pitching staff was throwing batting practice in the fifth. That’s when things went south. Edgewood hammered out 17 hits to go along with the 14 runs, 13 of those came during that last inning. Bailey (two) Bradley Boone, JT Brazell, Undrez Crawford and Alex Johnson barrelled up doubles. Johnson and Mitchell Boyd took it a step further, banging out triples.

And then – if Johnson’s stat sheet wasn’t explosive enough – he added a grand slam and finished the day with five RBIs.

Bailey, Boyd (two), Brazell, Crawford, Jones and Dawson Owens finished the outing with RBIs.
