Wildcats tame the Cougars in home opener

EDGEWOOD – The Edgewood Academy Wildcats brought a storm of offense to the Southern Academy Cougars Friday night. The home opener saw the wildcat offense totaling 393 total yards of offense and putting 32 points on the board despite the heavy downpours. At the end of the night, Edgewood knocks off Southern 32-14.

“Was very pleased on how we came out and executed early. We tried to keep things simple as far as game plan went. Did a good job of mixing things up with the run and pass and hit some big plays with both.” Said Edgewoods Head Coach Chad Michaels

Trevor Rodie opened the scoring for Edgewood catching a 51 yard pass from Austin Champion in the first. Champion would find Rodie for two more touchdowns of 48 and 33 yards in the second and third quarters. Rodie finished the night with 155 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns.

Bradley Boone also got in on the scoring action in the first, sprinting 55 yards to pay dirt to put the Wildcats up 13 – 0.

Edgewood would take the lead going into the half 19-0 with Trevor Rodie scoring twice and Bradley Boone scoring once.

Coming out after the half, Edgewood continued to keep pressure on the Cougars. Austin Champion called his own number for a 1 yard touchdown run early in the third putting the Wildcats up 25-0.

The Champion to Rodie connection would strike again late in the third for a 33 yard touchdown pass, Rodie’s third of the night. Edgwood leads 32 – 0.

The Cougar’s offense finally got rolling late in the third on a 65 yard run for a score, and midway through the fourth with a 50 yard TD run, giving them 14 points on the night.

Edgewood QB Austin Champion would finish the night 11-17 with 234 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.
“Austin did a great job of reading the defense and taking what they gave him and also hitting the deep ball when it was available.” Michaels said.

Bradley Boone finished the night with 16 rushing attempts for 180 yards and 1 touchdown. Chance McDaniel and Brock Whitt also touched the ball for 4 and 2 yards respectively.

Trevor Rodie lead the receiving corps with 5 catches for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns, Brody Whitt had 1 for 24 yards, JT brazell 2 for 21, Tyler wynn pulled in one for 18 yards, Boone snagged one for 13 and JB Collier grabbed one for three yards.

On the defensive side of the ball JT Brazell led the team with 5.5 tackles (4 Solo) and Bradley Boone had 4.5 tackles (4 Solo).

Mchaels – “Going forward we have to continue to try to develop some depth and continue to get our young guys some experience.”

Edgewood continues their homestand next Friday against Hooper.
