MONTGOMERY – With the area tournament hours away, the Montgomery Catholic Volleyball Knights didn’t lose focus on the final matches of the regular season, knocking off Pike Road and LAMP in straight sets.
Catholic defeats Pike Road (2-0)
The Volleyball Knights and the Patriots played the first set close. Pike Road went on the attack, taking advantage of Catholic’s slow start. The Knights trailed a majority of the match, but they were finally able to land some hits, tying the set at 16-16. The two played back and forth volleyball the remainder of the match with the Knights getting the better of the exchange and winning the first set 25-23.
That momentum carried over into the second set where the Knights picked up the 25-19 victory. Montgomery Catholic stayed in front for most of the set. Pike Road made a late push, forcing Catholic errors. Lennon McAnnally shut things down for the Patriots with a kill on the final point.
Catholic defeats LAMP (2-0)
Catholic came out and set the tone early, scoring often and doing a good job of keeping LAMP’s defense off balance. With big hits coming down from the front row, the Knights have adopted a scrappy style of play that has them flying all over the floor and taking advantage of every opportunity to score. Montgomery Catholic puts LAMP away 25-19 to win the first set.
Set 2 was a much different contest as LAMP pushes every point causing Catholic to, in a sense, buckle down. The Knights – facing a focused LAMP squad – are forced stay on their toes to keep ahead in the match and figure out ways to keep LAMP’s defense off balance. The LAMP Setter does a great job of keeping the Golden Tigers in the game with her offense and smart plays at the net. Ultimately, though, unforced errors end the night for LAMP as Catholic seals the 25-18 victory.
