St. James blows through area opponents, advances to next round

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD – The St. James School Trojans – who capped 2020 with a first-round loss to Wetumpka in the regional tournament – have taken the first steps to rectifying that and moving deeper into the 6A postseason. So far, the Trojans have ran roughshod over the area; winning it outright in a clean sweep and then knocked off Carver (3-0) to punch their ticket into the Area Tournament championship and the regional tournament and then knocked off Lanier (3-1) to claim the championship and a first-round showdown with Hueytown in Montgomery.

“I’m extremely excited for this team to make it to this point,” said Karen Lee, coach of the Volleyball Trojans. “It’s always special to make it out of the area and get to this point in the season. It helps in setting expectations for the upcoming years. These girls get a chance to leave their mark on St. James volleyball and volleyball in general.”

St. James def. Carver – Area Tournament Semifinal

After receiving a first-round bye, the Trojans didn’t take long to fan the ferocity of the Wolverines, defeating them 25-14, 25-6 and 25-19 to advance to the championship match.

Lee: “they were in sync with each other and played with great intentionality.”

Danielle Greene and Ava Card paced the Trojans offense connecting on hitting percentages of .471 and .278, respectively. Rachel Rice was also in the mix swinging at an impressive .250. According to Lee, Veronika Kocian was one of the driving forces behind the Trojans’ success with 19 assists. Defensively, Sierra Boles, Kaylin Corley and Card recorded a combined 29 digs.

St. James def. Lanier – Area Championship Match

In the finale, the Trojans appeared to be marching to another set sweep defeating Lanier 25-7 in the opener. The Poets, though, found their voice and delivered a second-set soliloquy stopping the Trojans in the tracks, 25-23. It was all Trojans, all the way to close out the night with scores of 25-10 and 25-3.

Lee: “We are certainly getting into system more effectively. The girls are really striving to perfect our system plays which will give us more of an edge in the postseason.

Rachel Rice led the Trojans in the championship match with seven service aces and a hitting percentage just shy of .350. Kiya Jupiter swung at a .182 percentage. Cam Greene tossed up 21 assists. Boles and Corley combined for 25 digs in the win.

  • Danielle Greene had 24 kills, 5 blocks, and 2 digs
  • Rachel Rice had 16 kills, 10 aces, 9 digs and 1 assist
  • Sierra Boles had 9 kills, 7 aces, and 24 digs
  • Cameron Greene had 3 kills, 2 aces, 13 digs, and 30 assists
  • Veronika Kocian had 3 aces, 9 digs, and 32 assists
  • Kiya Jupiter had 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 digs
  • Kaylin Corley had 1 kill, 4 aces, 20 digs, and 6 assists
  • Kaci Armistead had 1 dig
