Trinity repeats as state champion, defeats Montgomery Catholic

BIRMINGHAM – Montgomery Catholic’s bid for a state championship in volleyball fell short Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to rival Trinity Presbyterian. The Wildcats – No. 2 behind the Knights for a majority of the 2021 season – bested their rivals to repeat as 3A State Champions winning 28-26, 25-10 and 25-22.

Addison Cherry – one of the key Wildcats throughout the season – capped the year with her second Tournament MVP. The Junior accounted for 42 assists, nine digs and four kills. Emma Moody and Emma Kate Smith had 13 kills each while Reese Patterson added nine. Isabelle Hill finished the championship match with nine digs.

In the first set Trinity rallied to go up 5-3. Alysse Rudolph – after Montgomery Catholic won back serve – added an ace, but Trinity rallied to push ahead 9-5. Harper Howell and Julinne Pharram slammed down a pair of kills and then Mally Barranco went to work with aces from the service stripe, moving the mark to 14-12, with the Knights still trailing.

Both teams pushed the pace in the first set, and the Knights gained the lead, 21-20 thanks to the work Lennon McAnnally and Rudolph. Trinity answers. So does Catholic, moving the score to 22-21 and forcing a the Wildcats to call a timeout.

Howell puts down a point for the Knights to put her squad up 24-22 and cause Trinity to take a second timeout. The Knights set up for a block, but the ball ricochets off the Knights and out of bounds for the Wildcats point.

Trinity reclaims the lead and – with a Moody kill – claims the first set 28-26.

McAnnally (with eight digs) and Rudolph finished the match with a combined 26 kills. Pharrams added eight. Barranco finished the afternoon with 11 digs. Maria Schwarz ha 17 assists and Audrey Trant had 15.

Set Two belonged to the knights as they raced ahead 13-5.

Trinity answers behind the play of Ella Grace Lowe, ultimately forcing Catholic to take a timeout up 17-13.

Rudolph drops in a pair of aces to put the Knights up 19-13 and force a Trinity timeout.  Moody pop off a couple of big serves moving the mark to 23-16. Howell and McAnnally – though – slammed shut the door on hopes of a Wildcats run, winning the set 25-17 and moving the match to a 1-1 tie.

Trinity – unphased by the pressure of a playing for a state championship – took advantage of every opportunity presented. The Wildcats led 10-5, then 16-8 and 19-9.

Catholic can’t capture any momentum losing 25-10. In the championship set (Montgomery Catholic up 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

Down the stretch, the Wildcats pulled away, winning set up a fourth -and final – set of the match. Set No. 4 placed the pressure squarely on the shoulders of the Knights. With the play of Rudolph, the Wildcats held a six-point lead at 11-6 and moved as close as 17-24.

Ultimately – the play of the Wildcats front line rotation was too much to overcome. Trinity pushed ahead 22-21, before ending the match 25-22.
