CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE – One of the areas PCA Wrestling coach Trent Staggs wanted to focus this season was grappling against sectional competition. Earlier this month his Panthers got a preview of things to come tying up with multiple teams in the 10th PCA Duals. The Panthers – led by the undefeated efforts of Brysen Pugh, Brody Pugh and Andrew Allen – grappled their way to a second place finish, losing to Piedmont (5-0) in the championship match.

“Winning our pool and placing second in the tournament is the culmination of all the hard work the wrestlers have put in so far this season,” said Trent Staggs, PCA Wrestling Coach. “It gives us great momentum heading into the Region 3 Duals on January 6.”

The Region 3 Duals – hosted by Montevallo – will pit the Panthers against American Christian (Tuscaloosa), Oak Grove and the host Bulldogs. The next day, January 7, PCA travels to Montgomery to take part in the 21-team Julian McPhillips Invitational.

But that’s looking to the future – the matter at hand is the Panthers and their historic finish.

PCA knocked off Dothan (60-12), Houston Academy (48-24) and St. James (42-24) to win their pool. Staggs highlighted the efforts of Matthew Pos, David Tubbs-Hill and Aiden Cockrell – along with the three undefeated Panthers – as key to their success.

Piedmont ran the table in their pool defeating Catholic (42-34), Shelby County (42-36) and T.R. Miller (70-12).

In the championship, Piedmont knocked off the host Panthers 52-27.

Shelby County (3-1 on the day) defeated St. James (2-2 on the day) to finish third.
