Holtville Baseball poised for another run

Central Al Scoreboard

CENTRAL ALABAMA SCOREBOARD OFFICE – The Holtville High Bulldogs strung together 27 wins and advanced to the third round of the 5A AHSAA Baseball Playoffs before being eliminated by St. Paul’s Episcopal. But according to coach Scott Tubbs – that was just the beginning of what this team has to offer.

“I think we have the makeup to make an honest run deep in the playoffs again,” said Tubbs. “We return all but one of the starters and all of our pitchers have returned.”

Southern Union signee Todd Wilson and Junior Randy Davis accounted for a host of the team’s 27 wins on the mound and return to anchor the rotation this season. Wilson, who was the team’s No. 2 a year ago, finished 2021 with 11 wins and 97 strikeouts boasting a 2.14 ERA. Davis – the Bulldogs Ace as a sophomore – went 7-3 just under 70 strikeouts.

Offensively the Bulldogs – who hit for a combined .281 last season – return five starters who batted north of .300. Chief among them is Jacksonville State commit Sam Silas (.323), batting in the two-hole behind Wilson. The middle of the lineup will more than likely feature Southern Miss commit Drey Barrett, Southern Union signee Garrett Ingram, Cooper Mann, Tanner Potts and Mikey Forney.

Holtville will host Park Crossing Saturday in an early-season doubleheader, on Monday will welcome Stanhope Elmore to town and then on Tuesday will host Childersburg. To round out the month the Bulldogs will travel down to the Wiregrass to face Ariton (2/24 at Charles Henderson), Opp (2/25 also at Charles Henderson) and perennial baseball power G.W. Long (2/26 at Troy University).

Tubbs – looking over the schedule – also highlighted the home-and-home with Sylacauga on March 1 and March 10 and then the Bulldogs showdown with Hoover on March 22 as games to watch.
