SLAPOUT – It just wasn’t Holtville’s night. There’s really no better way to put it.

The Bulldogs dropped their second straight and third overall as West Blocton exacted some vengeance for a big home loss last season, beating Holtville 26-7 at Boykin Field Friday night.

The Bulldogs biggest play of the night happened as the third quarter ticked away, when sophomore quarterback Keiland Baker and junior receiver Eric Atkins hooked up on a 61 yard pass play to the one yard line. Senior running back Shawn Brackett rushed in the touchdown to open the fourth quarter.

But Holtville didn’t threaten West Blocton after that, and they hadn’t threatened them before.

“Whew … this one hurts. We got physically outplayed tonight,” head coach Jason Franklin said. “They physically outplayed us. That’s about all I can say. We couldn’t establish any runs, so we had to throw the ball a lot. We have to be able to run the ball to be effective, and they did a good job of doing what they do.”

4A West Blocton, who the Bulldogs dispatched 43-25 last year on the road, dominated the line of scrimmage. They put starting quarterback Tanner Potts on the bench with a first-quarter interception. And Baker, who was in relief, tossed an interception, which West Blocton’s Briggs Glass took 60 yard for a touchdown, putting things fully out of reach midway through the third quarter.

“I thought we could step up to the challenge, and we just didn’t,” Franklin said. “I’ve got to do a better job of coaching our guys up. That’s all on me.”

Baker managed 180 yards passing and 29 yards rushing. Atkins led the receiving with 90 yards. Senior Connor Hackett led the defense with 14 tackles.

The Bulldogs fall to 2-3 on the year with Jemison coming up on the region schedule.
