CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP – Donoho 3, Pleasant Valley 1

     BIRMINGHAM – Donoho School senior Lily Grave Draper delivered 22 kills and 34 digs to lead the Raiders to an intense 25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16 win over Pleasant Valley Wednesday to claim the AHSAA Class 2A State Championship as the AHSAA 2022 State Volleyball Championships continued Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. All finals are being played in the adjacent 5,500-seat Bill Harris Arena.
     The Falcons (44-14) won the Class 1A state championship in 2021 and 2019. The move to 2A only made more determined. Wednesday’s state title was 13th in the school’s history.

     Donoho, coached by Anna Taylor, totaled 68 kills as a team. In addition to Draper’s total, Mary Marshall Perry collected 13 kills, Ansley Simmons 11, and Estella Connell nine. Setter Samantha Wakefield distributed 52 assists, had seven kills, 22 digs and three aces.
     Pleasant Valley (35-16), coached by Dana Bryant, was led by Allie Bryant’s 12 kills and 17 digs. Setter Maddie Schwabe had 29 assists, Lily Henry managed 11 kills, Madison Schwabe added nine kills and 12 digs, Ella Parris totaled six kills and 19 digs, and Madi Hay had 12 digs.
     Both teams are from Calhoun County with Wednesday’s championship match the sixth match between the two this season.
