The Wetumpka High School soccer program observed Senior Night on Tuesday at the Wetumpka Sports Complex Stadium. These were the first soccer games ever played at the new stadium as Wetumpka’s varsity teams hosted Beauregard. The Tribe team combined to outscore the visiting Hornets 15-0.
The Lady Indians christened their new home venue with a dominating 8-0 victory. Wetumpka’s speed, talent, and experience advantage was evident as they controlled the field and pace from the opening kickoff. Morgan Sims continued her hot start by scoring the first goal ever at the new stadium. It was her first of 3 on the night and was assisted by senior Marlie Fuller. Emily Smith pitched in with 2 goals. Single goals were netted by senior Ainsley Harrison, Jeweliana Holton, and Fuller who also registered 3 assists. Senior Madison Milton and Reagan Christensen combined on the shutout for the Lady Indians. Wetumpka improved to 4-1 on the season.
Between games Wetumpka Soccer observed the Class of 2023 Senior Night activities. The senior class was announced and presented by emcee Josh Oswald. The group of 14 consisted of Emi Chamorro, Marlie Fuller, Ainsley Harrison, Madison Milton, Bella Watson, Becca Worrell, Filipe Batistella, Taylor Gunn, Ethan Ingram, Jerry Ingram, Yair Lopez, Brady Quarles, Nathan Ryan, and Mark Tessier.
The varsity boys took the field next and wasted little time in surging ahead of the visiting Hornets. Senior Mark Tessier scored on a penalty kick within the first 4 minutes of the game to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Moments later Angel Martinez showed why he is one of the leading scorers in the state by notching the first of his 3 goals in the game. Wetumpka would a take a 3-0 lead into halftime. In the second Wetumpka methodically controlled possession and pushed their lead to the final margin of 7-0 with goals scored by Austin Holley, senior Felipe Batistella, and Brody Worrell. Seniors Jerry Ingram and Nathan Ryan combined on the shutout, highlighted by Ryan saving a penalty kick attempt moments after entering as the keeper. The Indians remain undefeated at 5-0. Both varsity teams will return to the field Friday as they visit Stanhope Elmore in rivalry and area games.
The Wetumpka junior varsity boys team also played Tuesday. The Indians visited Montgomery Catholic and left with a 4-1 win to secure a perfect night for the soccer program. Wetumpka was led in scoring by Mark Kasen Evans with 2 goals. Cole Cox and Brandon Sanchez both chipped in 1. The JV boys will get a week off before visiting Prattville on 3/1.
